Young Bodies/Somebody’s by Miranda Michalowski
June is a first-year student and is on her university swim team, counting every calorie in the lead-up to her big meet. Her older sister, Anna, spends her nights going home from nightclubs with strangers, telling herself that she couldn’t be happier. Both sisters keep their shame hidden until their mother Dawn announces she is moving in with her boyfriend and Anna and June must move out. Their secret lives begin to unravel.
Jopuka Alumni Miranda Michalowski’s Young Bodies/Somebody’s is a sensitive portrayal of a fragile time for many women coming into their own. Contrasting monologues create a sense of unity yet disconnect between a family.
